What do you need ?

Enthusiasm and patience. Tools are available in college to start with, and as you get to enjoy what you are doing you may wish to start to obtain a set of tools of your own. Students can bring their own wood to carve - or it can be supplied by the college at cost. (Index)

Aims and Objects of the course Carving a Love Spoon

To enable you to embark on your own woodcarving projects, with a little helping hand from the tutor. Absolute beginners welcome. Tuition given in Low Relief, Chip Carving, Carving in the Round, and Lettering.

Apart from the above, the course includes learning how to recognise various timbers, its selection, drying and carving properties. You will learn how to prepare timber and use stains and polishes for interior and external use.

We shall look at the different types of tools used for working wood, and for clamping and holding it while you are working on it. You will learn how to sharpen and generally look after your tools. As a sideline we shall show you how to sharpen other woodworking tools such as plane irons, panel saws, and anything else you would like to bring in.

Other subjects touched on will include some of the history of woodcarving, design copying and tracing, laminating, stone carving, stone selection, stone carving tools, gold and silver leaf work, elements of woodturning.

In the first stages, projects will be given for you to work on in order to enable you to sample the four main types of woodcarving and develop your skills so that having completed the set projects, you can go on and work on your own pieces. I only make one promise, and that is that you will surprise yourself with what you can accomplish. It's fun too, so sign on and join us, but don't leave it too long. (Index)
