Explorer Scouts Explorer Scouts are young people, boys and girls, usually aged between 14 and 18 years old. They make up the fourth Section of the Scouting family. There are many types of Explorer Scout Units, some may be linked to your local Scout Group, others may be based around different activities.

Not all Units meet each week, because you will often be out and about at weekends or in the holidays doing activities. There will be times when you will be busy doing other things such as exams, and being an Explorer Scout will have to fit around these.

As an Explorer Scout, you will get the chance to work with other Explorer Scouts in your District, not just your Unit. By doing this, you will get the chance to do many more actvities, not just the ones your Unit organises.

Programme Zones There are eight Programme Zones, each with its own aims for the Explorer Scouts taking part in activities in that Zone. The Programme Zones for Explorer Scouts are:
  • Outdoors
  • Skills
  • Physical Recreation
  • Community Service
  • Environment
  • International
  • Values
  • Relationships
Core Values Unit programmes should always show the following underlying values and ways of working:
  • fun
  • getting on with others
  • activity
  • keeping the Promise
  • personal development
  • working together
  • responsibility
Explorer Awards Methods As part of the Balanced Programme across the Programme Zones, the Unit should experience a variety of Methods through the programme. This will make meetings and activities more interesting and appeal to more Members. Unit programmes gives suggested activities in each Programme Zone.

Awards In the Explorer Scout section there are three main awards:
  • The Chief Scout's Platinum Award
  • The Chief Scout's Diamond Award
  • The Queen's Scout Award
