How to Recruit Adult Helpers
The time is NOW ... and the need is NOW
| |
HERE ARE JUST A FEW OF THE THINGS THAT YOU CAN DO IN YOUR GROUP
-
Have an "At Home" or an open day for parents. Invite them along to see the fun, friendship and adventure generated within the sections, give them tea, coffee and a sticky bun, and then tell them what your needs are in terms of leadership, helpers, and parent assistance on the parents committee - you could invite someone from PR to give the story if you are uncertain about it, but use the occasion as a recruitment platform.
- Send a letter to parents via the members - or better - post it to them so you are sure that they all get it, outlining your needs.
- Put up posters in local shops (available from PR)
- Get an article in the local press, telling them about your shortfalls and the effect on the inability to serve young people, telling them a little about the story of scouting. Backup information available from PR.
- Posters on local school notice boards.
- Recruitment leaflets in doctors, clinic, vet, dentists waiting rooms, library, anywhere people sit and wait - again Recruitment leaflets available from PR.
- Recruit from Explorers, Network, Police.
- Appeal to local churches - posters - leaflets - get a notice in their weekly and/or monthly news sheets, sample notice available from PR,
or click [ HERE ] and also sample response form [ HERE ].
- Appeal to the local Youth Service - notify need for help, but be specific.
- Invite a parent to a planning meeting, seek their ideas and involve them.
- Invite a PR rep to your AGM to give a short presentation on Recruitment.
- An exhibition in the community such as a library or as part of some other event. PR have the kit if you want to use it - ask.
- Recruitment involves everybody, Section Leaders, assistants, helpers, groupies - treasurer, secretary, parent members, you all need to reach out to prospective parents, friends, total strangers, and ask them.
Just a few ideas to help you on your way. District will be recruiting as well as you, but you need to be doing it yourselves as well, you need to be active. If you are planning a recruitment campaign, don't hesitate to let PR know, and they will throw all they can to assist, but don't rely on them alone - it is a joint effort.
