What Happened
After these formal meetings, we then have ‘post meeting activities’ which can be very varied:- Speakers are invited to give talks to the members, past subjects have been, Royal Lifeboat Institution, The Cannock Extension canal, The Trent & Mersey Canal and a talk by Alan Firth who is a well know Canal artist.
Other ‘post meeting activities’ include Quiz’s, Photographic Competition and Games evenings including a Full Skittle alley. All of the above events take place within Brereton Social Club, however from time to time we also have additional Social gatherings outside of the club environment.
In the past the Club has organised European trips to view the Belgian canal network and a River Trip on the Severn at Worcester was organised to celebrate the Club's 25th birthday. We are currently working on a long weekend visit to Holland. We also visit other local boat clubs for ‘get together’ social evenings.
By far our major social happening is our ‘Annual Dinner & Dance’, this event took place in November last year at the Eaton Lodge Hotel, and after the Dinner, the Commodore and Social Chairperson gave out the various Trophies that had been won by the members throughout the year - see the Winners Page. The competitions are always contested strongly and no one ever gets to win without the necessary effort - even the Booby Prize.
Just prior to the Christmas holidays in December we had our Christmas Lunch at the Clifford Arms, this usually entails boating for 2/3 hours to Great Haywood to a restaurant we frequent during the year. We had an enjoyable meal and then made the return journey. What a day out that was?
Instead of every member sending out Christmas Cards to each other, it has been decided that we would all donate however much we wanted to a club fund, which would then be split between two agreed charities. this year the beneficiaries were the McMillan Nurses and the Air Ambulance.
